A Less Than Ideal Vegan Experience at Song Resort
If you’re planning a trip to Song Resort and identify as vegan, take note: your culinary journey may require a bit of extra homework.
The Lunch Letdown
My day started at the Bone Valley Cafe, where I was hopeful to find a hearty vegan meal. Unfortunately, vegan options were noticeably absent. The only glimmer of hope came in the form of a sweet potato taco—but only if you’re willing to ask for the cheese to be removed. Even then, the taco was far from satisfying. The potatoes were overly greasy with a pool of excess oil at the bottom, and I left still feeling hungry.
The Dinner Dilemma
After working up an appetite for dinner, I reached out to the concierge for help navigating the resort’s dinner options. What ensued was a series of miscommunications and limited choices:
- At a casual spot known for burgers and hot dogs, a potential vegan burger had been replaced by a falafel sandwich. However, uncertainty about whether the falafel and accompanying bread were truly vegan meant I had to pass.
- At the steakhouse, I was informed they were experimenting with a “cauliflower steak.” At just 100 calories per piece, it wasn’t exactly a filling meal for someone looking for a proper dinner so I declined. In the end, the kitchen presented a plate of hummus with an artful arrangement of vegetables.
Lessons for Fellow Vegans
Navigating Song Resort as a vegan turned out to be more challenging than expected. Here are a few tips if you decide to make the trip:
- Plan Ahead: Bring plenty of snacks or a meal in reserve. It might save you from the frustration of scouring the resort for acceptable options.
- Ask Questions Early: Don’t hesitate to inquire about the ingredients in each dish. The uncertainty surrounding vegan options can be a real headache when you’re already hungry.
- Expect Minimal Options: This trip underscored that some high-profile resorts still have a long way to go in accommodating vegan diets.
While Song Resort has its merits, the lack of thoughtful vegan options means that vegans might leave with more than just a few empty calories. If you’re headed there, pack smart and be prepared for a culinary adventure that could use a lot more care for vegan travelers.
Happy travels—and may your next meal be both kind and filling!
